Movie:
Cry Heard 'Round The World
Movie night! We will furnish popcorn, drinks, and
snacks. The movie focuses on the rally in Washington,
D.C., on February 17, 2013, where 50,000 people from around
the country came in freezing weather and said NO to the
Keystone XL pipeline. It includes footage on the Texas
bus that traveled 34 hours to the rally, along with
exclusive footage and interviews with residents affected
by the devastating oil spill in Mayflower, Arkansas.
Everyone is
welcome. You don't have to be a Sierra Club member. Just
show up. We'd love to meet you.
Our General
Meeting starts at 7:00 pm but come at 6:30 for snacks,
information and fellowship. Our meeting takes place at REI, 4515 Lyndon B Johnson Freeway,

up now for a backpacking adventure in the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains! This is a favorite location for its cool
mountain air, roaring streams, wildlife and spectacular
panoramas. Five trail itinerary options fan out to
different parts of this vast basin preserve in Santa Fe
National Forest. We provide transportation from Dallas to
trailhead via sleeper bus with professional drivers and
trained volunteer backpacking leaders to bring you home
safe, happy and inspired from five memorable days of
backpacking and camping. It's a great value at $290 per
person through June 16 or $320 while seats last. Part of
the trip price benefits the conservation and outings
programs of the Dallas Sierra Club.

10 (Tue) Dallas Sierra Club General Meeting

14 (Sat) White Rock Lake Clean-up
Walk and talk while picking up trash and recyclables at the
Sierra Club's adopted section of White Rock Lake Park. Meet at
8:15 AM at the Love of the Lake office, northeast corner of
Garland Road and Buckner Boulevard. Look for the crowd
drinking free juice and coffee. Gloves, trash bags, etc. will
be provided. Our area includes one of the wonderful prairie
restoration areas, so there are always birds and wildflowers

18 (Wed) Outings Committee Meeting
Meet upstairs at 6:30 at the Dallas REI store, north side of
LBJ Freeway, between Midway and Welch Roads. This month's
agenda will include critique of the Sacramento Mountains trip
and trip leader review of plans for the upcoming Pecos
Wilderness trip. Outings leaders, prospective leaders, and
people interested in outings are welcome. Ask Mark to be

21 (Sat) Upgrade Trails at Cedar Ridge Preserve
Help upgrade some of the more beautiful trails in Dallas.
It's a great morning workout. No tools are required,
although bringing gloves and drinking water would be smart.
Just show up, ready to lend a hand. Work from 9:00 to noon.
then walk around the preserve and admire the wildflowers.

3-9 (Thu-Wed) Fourth-of-July Bus Trip to Backpack in the Pecos
Wilderness, New Mexico
Register
now for the fabulous Fourth in northern New Mexico! This
is backpacker's paradise -- a high basin of forests and
meadows on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains. The awesome landscape supports elk, bighorn sheep,
marmots and more. Alpine vegetation and breathtaking vistas
are rewards for reaching the Skyline Trail at tree line. Five
fun trip options ranging from moderately strenuous to
strenuous span five trail days and four nights. Your sleeper
bus departs Dallas on Thursday night at 8:00 and returns at

Trammell S. Crow, who transformed Earth Day Dallas into the
largest Earth Day celebration in the world, will talk about
Earth Day Texas' future plans. Everyone is invited to

16 (Sat) Beginner Backpacking Class - Make It Safe, Make it
Easy, Make It Fun
Come
for a fun day of learning so you'll be ready to explore new
special places this fall. This comprehensive class is ideal
for learning all about backpacking or for refreshing old
knowledge and skills. We'll cover backpacks, boots, clothing,
tents, sleeping bags, cookware, food, water treatments,
wilderness ethics and even short sessions to discuss men's and
women's outdoor "issues". Instructors are experienced
Dallas Sierra Club leaders who can relate "wish someone had
told me that before" tips from years of trail and camp
experiences. We encourage questions and a hands-on look at
outdoor gear and food items. Participants get priority for
weekend beginner backpacking trips designed specifically for
those in the class. A class booklet and lunch of backpacking
food are included. Bring your refillable water bottle and any
snacks you'd like. The class fee is $25 for Sierra Club
members, $35 for non-members. No reservations - just show up.
Payment by CASH or CHECK is preferred. The class meets in
the Guadalupe Peak Room, 2nd floor of the Dallas REI store,
4515 LBJ Freeway, Dallas 75244 (north side of LBJ between
Welch and Midway). Arrive around 10:15 AM to register and get
settled. The class will begin at 10:30 and end about 4:45.

27-Sep 2 (Wed-Tue) Labor Day Backpacking in the Weminuche
Wilderness, Colorado
Escape
the Texas heat this Labor Day weekend. Join this trip to the
cool Colorado mountains of the Weminuche Wilderness, west of
Creede. This is the largest designated Wilderness in Colorado,
with a variety of terrain in mountains, green valleys, high
lakes and streams. Trips will range from moderately strenuous
backpacking with day hikes to strenuous hikes crossing the
Continental Divide multiple times. The Weminuche offers all
the miles you want to hike. It's a hidden jewel and one of our
most popular trips. Details and sign-up information will be
