Dallas Sierra Club News - June 2019

General Meeting Program - Tuesday, June 11, 7:00 pm - Refreshments at 6:30

A Visit to Phantom Ranch in Grand Canyon National Park
Phantom Ranch in Grand Canyon National ParkIn Grand Canyon National Park the only lodging below the Rim is at Phantom Ranch. Designed in 1922 by Mary Colter at a time when women were generally not allowed in such professions, Phantom Ranch is little changed today. There are only two ways to get there: you can walk the 10 miles and 5,000 feet downhill, or you can ride a mule the same distance. It's just a matter of what part of your body you want to have hurting.

In January 2019 four Dallas Sierra Club members, Bill and Sue Greer and Mike and Diana Rawlins spent 3 nights at Phantom Ranch. This program will tell you a little about that visit. It snowed the night before we headed down so the hike was a little more "interesting" than expected. You can't really appreciate Phantom Ranch without knowing a little of its history so we will talk about that a bit. And we will give you some hints about how you can win the lottery for a visit to Phantom Ranch!

Everyone is welcome. FREE! You don't have to be a Sierra Club member. Just show up. We'd love to meet you.

Our General Meeting starts at 7:00 pm, but come at 6:30 for snacks, information and fellowship. The meeting takes place at Brookhaven College. Click over to our General Meeting page for more information and a map.

Volunteers Needed - Secretary, Programs and Refreshments

The Dallas Sierra Club is an all-volunteer organization. We have no staff to keep everything on track, so need your help. We have three key volunteer position open right now that we really need to fill.

volunteerThe first position is that of Club Secretary. This position required someone willing to come to our monthly Executive Committee meeting and take the minutes. The Executive Committee meets on the first Wednesday of every month (with a few exceptions due to holidays, etc.). So the time commitment is for one evening per month to attend the Executive Committee meeting plus a few hours to type up the minutes and send them out.

The second position we need to fill is critical to the success of the Dallas Sierra Club - General Meeting Program Coordinator. This position call for a time commitment of one evening per month at our General Meeting (second Tuesday of each month) and some phone and email time at home. The Program Coordinator job is to find and schedule our General Meeting programs. Ideally, we would like to find more that one person to fill position so that the duties can be shared.

And last, but not least, is a new position we have created - General Meeting Refreshment Coordinator. We need someone who can come to all of our General Meetings and provide the refreshments. Don't worry, the Club pays for them, we just need someone to buy them and set them up before the General Meeting and clean up after the meeting.

If you would like to volunteering for one of these positions or would like more information, please contact the Dallas Group Chair, Dan Moulton at 972-754-2506 or via email.

Sierra Club National Political Team 'Listening Session'

The National Political Team, a committee of Sierra Club volunteers and staff, will hold a "listening session" on Sunday, June 30th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Communications Workers of America Hall at 1408 N. Washington Ave., Dallas 75204. The national committee believes for the first time in recent memory that Texas could be a swing state next year in the federal elections. This meeting will provide a chance for Dallas Sierrans to impact the 2020 national political process by providing input to decision makers and planners. Your opinions are being solicited now to help mold the selection process for the National Board's endorsement of the 2020 presidential and congressional candidates and to help the national team decide which states to send their staff organizers and financial resources.

The meeting will also provide a chance for Dallas Sierrans to learn more about the Sierra Club election program for next year at both the state and national levels. Plan to attend this important and informative meeting to get involved early and let our National Political Team know how interested and engaged our local members are about Texas. Next year could be a historic year politically for the environment, and you can be a part of the effort.

Your RSVP will be appreciated so that we can plan for room space and refreshments. Contact David Griggs at wdgriggs1@gmail.com

Limerick of the Month

In the woods I go out for a stroll.
When I hike, it is good for my soul.
In my life there's a dearth
     Being with Mother Earth.
I find Nature will make me feel whole.

By Kirk Miller

If you would like to submit an environmental limerick for our Limerick of the Month feature, send it to editors@dallassierraclub.org.

This year's July destination for mountain backpacking is the Uncompahgre Wilderness, southwest of Gunnison. The area's been called the "Switzerland of America." We'll hike a loop using trails by the East Fork and Middle Fork of the Cimarron River. One party will hike 18 miles in four days, including a 12,600' saddle separating the two drainage basins. Two other parties will hike the same trails plus a day hike to 14,301' Uncompahgre Peak, 29 miles in five days. This outing is strenuous due to the high altitude.
