»Backpacking 101 Class - Don't miss it!Backpacking 101 Class - Don't miss it!Got winter cabin fever? Yearning to camp away from the crowds and enjoy the backcountry? Want help getting started or brushing up your skills? Join a fun day discussing all the essentials of backpacking. Our outings leaders with years of wilderness experience will present backpacking topics with candor--packs, tents, menus, clothing, hygiene, water treatment and more, including tips to improve your comfort and keep gear affordable. There's even a breakout session so men and women can discuss issues particular to them. Our goal is to help you safely enjoy outdoor trail experiences We're not selling gear or anything beyond our enthusiasm for backpacking.  This class will be prticularly helpful for new backpackers on our upcoming trips to Big Bend National Park, Colorado Bend State Park and more. We'll also offer easy one-night spring outings designed especially for people attending the class.  Location: Whole Foods Market, Preston Road at Forest Lane, Dallas (map).  Time: 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Light lunch included. Please bring water bottle/beverage.  Cost: $35 for Sierra Club members, $40 for non-members. Includes handouts and light lunch. We encourage and appreciate early sign ups so we'll have enough food and handouts. You may pay on-line here or pay at the door if space remains available. Happy trails!

To read all about the trip, including new hike options, go to this PDF. You'll also find information on cost and how to sign up. Our chartered bus leaves Dallas Wednesday night, February 27 and will return before sunrise Monday, March 4. This year's trip has options to backpack in the Chisos Mountains and from the Chisos Mountains southwest to Mule Ears Overlook. It also has options for base camping and day hiking in the east, central and west regions of the park.
